If you have the computers in your office networked, or a switchboard operated phone system, you have fiber optic cables. Just like everything else, these cables and connections require regular maintenance. If you notice your network or Internet slowing down, or your phones are cracking or making noises, you need to troubleshoot the fiber optics while checking the devices themselves. Of course, you are going to need the right tools to troubleshoot and then fix the problem. Here are a few basic tools to have on hand to take care of the problem.

Fiber Optic Test Kit

If you were going to test an electrical socket, you would use a voltmeter. To test the fiber optic lines, you need a test kit. You want to test that the system has power and just how much data is being transmitted across the lines. If the transmission rate is slow, the lines or connectors may be dusty, or a line may be partially cut. When there is no power at all, there is usually something wrong on the utilities end, such as a cable or satellite outage.

Cleaning Kit

Fiber optic connections need to be free of dust and dirt or you will experience a slow down or loss of transmission. Before using a test kit, make sure all your connections are clean. A cleaning kit will include wipes, fluid and tips for the different connectors. It is not a good idea to use canned air or lens cleaners, as they can leave a behind a residue that attracts more dust and dirt. If you do not have any cleanser specifically for fiber optics, rubbing alcohol can be used. It will evaporate quickly and does not leave a residue behind.

Crimping Tool

If there is damage to the sleeve around the actual fibers in the cord, you should cut the cord and attach a new connector piece. To ensure that the connector is attached properly, a crimping tool is needed. This can also be used for splicing two pieces of cable together when a longer piece is needed.

Having these fiber optic tools on hand, and making sure to check the cables for damage or wear and tear regularly will keep your systems running smoothly and quickly. In addition, cleaning the connections and cables will often take care of the problem. Now you won't have to call in the repair technician, saving the expense of a service call for a simple cleaning.
