Things To Consider When Installing Pallet Racks In Your Warehouse Or Loading Dock

Installing a teardrop pallet rack system to hold materials, products, or anything moving through your warehouse can add flexibility and allow you to use the vertical space without reducing floor space. Teardrop pallet rack systems are among the most popular in the warehouse industry and can offer some benefits that could be important if you need to add to your racks or reconfigure them later.

System Strength

Teardrop pallet rack systems are among the most robust designs on the market because of the slot design that holds the cross beams and platforms into the uprights. The teardrop slot design is shaped in a deep V shape, so beams engaged in the slot are held firmly in place by the weight of materials on the rack.

The pin design slides into the drop of the slot and slides down tightly, engaging the upright and creating a strong, rigid connection with the rest of the rack. Because the engagement uses friction and gravity to hold it in place, it will tighten the entire rack system up and help reduce swaying or movement of the rack once it is erected.

System Flexibility

Teardrop pallet rack systems are fast becoming the industry standard, and because so many manufacturers have adopted this design, the parts are often interchangeable between pallet rack systems. The benefit is that you can mix and match components to create a completely custom pallet rack system in your warehouse that suits your needs perfectly.

If one manufacturer offers a specific type of beam or shelf section you want to use, it is often just a matter of slotting it in place with your current uprights. The teardrop slot design also allows you to quickly pull some of the beams out and reconfigure a rack for larger pallets or to create an access route through the racks if it is needed.

Because these systems are easy to work with, making changes in-house is more manageable. Once the uprights are installed, you don't need a professional installer to assemble the system.

Added Security

Once the teardrop pallet rack beams are engaged to the uprights, you can add a locking device to the pin that ensures the beam and platform can not be accidentally lifted out of the slot. If a forklift operator lifted a pallet too high and hit the shelf above with the load, the locks would prevent any shelf movement to ensure it does not come loose.

In most situations, the weight of the pallets on the shelf would prevent enough movement for a pin to disengage, but the locks are inexpensive and don't require special tools or skills to install, so adding them to your racking system is an excellent way to add some peace of mind when installing beams and shelves.
